Rick Archbold

Our speaker Rick Archbold is a Canadian publishing veteran who has written
or
co-written numerous books of popular history.

These include:
THE DISCOVERY OF THE TITANIC,
HINDENBURG:
AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY;
RETURN TO MIDWAY
and
CANADA: OUR HISTORY.

He is currently writing a book for kids about
the workings of our federal democracy called
HOW TO BECOME PRIME MINISTER.
Rick lives in Toronto.

"HOW FARES THE MAPLE LEAF?"

 I'll trace the history of the maple leaf symbol and explain
 how it became the only possible unifying symbol for the flag.

Then, I'll look at recent developments in terms of Canadian symbols,
including the resuscitation of the Canadian Red Ensign (which flies
alongside the Maple Leaf) at the Vimy Memorial in France) and examine
 whether the values that I believe the flag represents are in any
 serious way under threat.
